FALCONS ARE AWARD WINNERS
Editor's note
During the last month a number of Fairmont East students have been awarded with many honors. Since we wanted to recognize these people and are limited to space, we have briefly mentioned each in the following story.
Rayburn Citizenship Award
Rick Rufner was selected as the recipient of the David V. Rayburn Kiwanis Citizenship Award by the faculty of Fairmont East.
Rick was selected on the basis of his use of potential ability throughout his three years of high school, service to his school and community, constant regard for the rights of others and exhibition of the character that David V. Rayburn encouraged.
Pugh Award
Symbolic of the highest combined challenge to East's athletic scholars is the Danny Pugh Award which was recently presented to Pat Hogan.
Pat was selected for his outstanding sportsmanship, spirit, and achievement, instilling of enthusiasm, incentive and better understanding to fellow athletes.
Throughout the ‘64-'65 school year, many East seniors have been honored with scholarships, and citizenship and leadership awards.
Scholarships are presented each year by the Kettering PTA Council to promising students who are planning careers in teaching. Seniors at East who received these scholarships and the colleges they plan to attend are as follows
Carol Dalton, Ohio State University; Jesse Randolph, Miriam Selby, University of Dayton; JoAnne Sidwell, Wellesley College alternate; JoAnn Ray.
James Franklin was presented the Peggy Brown Memorial Scholarship. He plans to attend Dennison University and major in English and Latin.
Jerry Lusk was presented the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Scholarship. This scholarship will pay Jerry's way through any college which offers the NROTC program.
B'nai B'rith
Olin Hall was awarded the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League Citizenship Award for his all-around good citizenship and scholastic accomplishments throughout the year.
I Dare You
The "I Dare You" Leadership Award was presented to JoAnn Ray and Gary Foster for their outstanding leadership qualities and physical, mental and social character development. -
AMS
Vicki Brandt was selected by the Fairmont East business faculty to receive the Administrative Management Society Award for the outstanding business student of the year. This is the second consecutive year that Vicki has received the award.
CAP
Senior, Richard Hartigan, was recently selected as the new cadet commander of Dayton-Gentile Squadron 704c of the Civil Air Patrol. Cadet Captain Hartigan assumed command during recent appropriate ceremonies at the Defense Electronics Supply Center, regular meeting place for the squadron.
American Chemical Society
The research and report contest sponsored by the American Chemical Society and involving five counties selected the team of Linda Knobel, Kathy Lee and Linda Puckett as the recipients of the second place award of $25, with Rick McCoy earning first honorable mention.
SPEAKERS CHOSEN FOR GRADUATION
Six commencement speakers for the first graduating class of Fairmont East High School were chosen, May 12, when ten finalists tried out in the presence of the entire senior class.
The speakers were graded on such points as clarity, content, effectiveness, and delivery. The judges consisted of six senior students, six faculty members and one administrator.
Those chosen to deliver their speeches on graduation are Jan Brandewie, who will give the benediction, Mary Waterman delivering the invocation and Ellen Trimmer speaking on "Treasures for a Life Time." Sherry Lloyd will present her speech under the topic of "The Light Which Shines in the Darkness," while Deem Bristow will speak on "The Longest Step" and Jean Blackburn on "What Is In a Name."
"What Is A Senior?" Discussed By Junior
As a junior I would like to have a say in this senior-dominated issue. I would like to give some of my views of seniors as I have seen them. As for those underclassmen who are having trouble telling who's a senior and who's not, here's a simple guide:
Seniors are students—
Who helped to win the WOL
In gymnastics, track and speech as well.
Who cheered the loudest on "Battle Cry"
Yelling V-I-C-T-O-R-Y.
Who for a while went to West
And got to find out that East is best.
Who put on the "Diary" in such a way
That it will be remembered for many a day.
Who held the first prom; took a trip on a train;
Elected a queen; helped name Victory Lane.
Who skip final exams and days of testing
And get out June 4 for sunning and resting.
Whose graduation date is near
While I must stay for another year.
Who set the goals and led the way
For future classes and those of today.
Who carry the hopes to keep peace alive
The leaders and doers—the class of ‘65.
